Islamophobia Awareness Week 2025

Join us for a week of dialogue, education, and community-building at Tulane. Islamophobia Awareness Week offers opportunities for all members of our community to learn, reflect, and connect around discussions of Muslim Life at Tulane University and Islamophobia prevention on campus. 
	Overview
Islamophobia Awareness Week at Tulane brings together students, faculty, and staff across campuses to confront Islamophobia and build meaningful community connections. The week features an interfaith panel, keynote lecture, faculty and staff training, a student-curated gallery project, and a shared visit with the New Orleans Muslim community.
This year, we will debut an interactive installation in the Lavin-Bernick Center for University Life that documents the history, presence, and contributions of Muslim life at Tulane.
Schedule of Events
Monday, October 27: Interfaith Panel & Community Building Circles
12:00–2:00pm Uptown, Diboll Gallery, Third Floor of the Commons
3:00–5:00pm Downtown, Tidewater Building Rm 1201
A moderated interfaith panel featuring local leaders and Tulane community members, followed by small-group dialogue circles led by Matt Wegmann from the Department of Equal Opportunity and Resolution Management in Human Resources.

Tuesday, October 28: Virtual Keynote with Amer Ahmed: Addressing and Preventing Islamophobia
12:00–1:00pm, via Zoom
Join us for a thought-provoking keynote address by Dr. Amer F. Ahmed, Vice Provost for Intercultural Excellence at the University of Vermont, on the topic of Islamophobia on university campuses. Drawing on his experience as a scholar-practitioner, Dr. Ahmed will explore the roots, impacts, and strategies for dismantling Islamophobic attitudes and practices in higher education. Participants will leave with actionable tools and frameworks for creating environments where all students are able to thrive.
Dr. Amer F. Ahmed joined the University of Vermont in 2021 serving as the Vice Provost for the Division of Intercultural Excellence. A nationally recognized practitioner and thought leader, Dr. Ahmed leverages diverse strategies, experiences, and theoretical perspectives to advance intercultural excellence and build capacity throughout institutions.

Thursday, October 30: Islamophobia Awareness Week Installation Reception
5:00–7:00pm, The Financial Spot in the Lavin Bernick Center
Join us for a reception celebrating the Islamophobia Awareness Week Installation featuring information, artwork and reflections from Muslim students curated by students from the Muslim Student Association who serve on the Islamophobia Working Group. Reception will feature mocktails and halal snacks and guided reflections with the student artists.

Friday, November 7: Mosque Visit to Masjid ur-Rahim
We will depart Tulane at 12:00pm and return by 3:00pm 
Join us for a visit to Masjid ur-Rahim in the Treme neighborhood with the Intercultural Leadership Program and the Islamophobia Working Group. The will include conversation with community leaders, and a meal with the mosque community.

Muslim Life at Tulane
October 27 – November 10, 2025
Lavin-Bernick Center for University Life, First Floor 
Curated by student leaders from the Muslim Student Association, this interactive installation documents the past and present of Muslim life at Tulane through research, portraits, and community reflections.
Features include:
- Timeline of Muslim Life at Tulane
- Reflections on Muslim Life at Tulane from MSA Students, Faculty and Staff
- MSA Today Showcase: photos, traditions, and upcoming goals of the Muslim Student Association.
- Portrait Collage + Interviews: portraits of current students, staff, and faculty with QR codes linking to digital interviews.
Join us for a reception featuring mocktails and halal snacks and guided reflections with the student artists.
